Geothermal energy is a growing form of renewable energy, but because of its nature and the fact that it is fairly new, there is still a long way to go until it is an energy source that is readily available to everyone. Geothermal energy is generated from the heat below the earth’s surface. The earth stores heat and energy from the sun in a layer of the earth just below the frost point. That energy can then be used to heat and cool homes and much more.

The technology to drill and retrieve that energy is still being developed, but a large part of the development process is determining how much energy is stored in a given location. Potential sites are tested for the correct temperatures and pressure to convert water into steam, making the location a viable source. In order to scout and identify viable locations, harvest the energy and maintain sources, data logging and monitoring is essential.
