Wednesday, NASA announced that its Spitzer Space Telescope found seven Earth-size planets orbiting a single star about 40 light-years away from Earth. The discovery set a new record for the greatest number of inhabitable planets found around a single star outside our solar system.

What Might Mars Sound Like?

It may seem like science fiction, but soon we'll know exactly what it sounds like on Mars. NASA's Mars 2020 project promises to send a new rover to the Red Planet in the summer of that year that will be wired for sound, allowing scientists to hear the ambient noises of another planet for the first time. Rovers sent to Mars have been fitted with microphones before, but the 2020 project will be the first mission in which the sound equipment will be put to use gathering data.

Inflight smoking has been banned from most airliners, but the rules on tobacco use aren't the same for the plane itself. On July 15th, a Boeing Jet operated by South African Airways was partly powered by tobacco plants, making it the first passenger flight in Africa to use biofuels during a flight between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
