The Wind101A comes programmed with an engineering unit to provide the average wind speed using a 10 second reading rate. If a different reading rate is desired, a different engineering unit must be created to properly convert pulses to wind speed.

A standard engineering unit can be used in the software by any logger, but will only be saved on the computer it was created on. Portable units are engineering units that are programmed into the logger, so will work on any machine the logger is used with, but will only be saved to that logger.

MadgeTech 2:

To set up an engineering unit in the software, click Identify Device and Read Status from the Device menu. Select the Device Detail tab and then click Engineering Units. On the Engineering Units tab click the Engineering Units Wizard. After reading the initial instructions click Next. Select the Recorder Unit Type: General, and Recorder Unit: Pulses, and click Next. For the Description and the Label, write the desired unit type, MPH, KPH, M/S or KNOTS and click Next.

For the recorder units (Pulses), the Low Scale Point will be 0 and the High Scale Point will be 1. For the wind speed unit on the right, the Low Scale Point should be 0 and the High Scale Point will be the Gain listed in the chart below for the selected reading rate and the desired Unit. For example, to calculate MPH for a 15 second reading rate, use 0.0569444, and click Next. Select the checkbox for “Save these units when the program closes” and click Next. There will be a summary of the unit on the final screen of the wizard and clicking Finish will save the unit and close the wizard. Any graph can now be read in this unit by right clicking the graph and choosing the unit in Select Graph Units.

To set up a portable units for the Wind101A logger click Identify Device and Read Status from the Device menu. Select the Device Detail tab and then click Engineering Units. Click the Device Units Wizard and after reading the initial instructions on the wizard, click Next. “Use portable units on this device” should be checked, and then press Next. For the Description and the Label, write the desired unit type, MPH, KPH, M/S or KNOTS and click Next. The Offset will remain 0 and the Gain should be set to the number listed in the chart below for the selected reading rate and the desired Unit. For example, to calculate MPH for a 15 second reading rate, use 0.0569444, and click Next. Typical options are to check “Enable engineering units for this device” and to uncheck “Ask me for my unit selections when I download data”. Click Next and Finish to save the unit to the device.
